Week 4 – Au revoir, May

The club will be quite glad to see the back of May, as weather and results have not been in our favour.

1s v Falkland 2

Falkland made the trip to the Racecourse Ground and elected to bat on winning the toss. Despite the early loss of Craig Williams who was smartly caught by Andy Murray off the bowling of Myles Trainor, this looked a good decision as they made serene progress to 116 for 1 off 20 overs helped by some wayward Ascot bowling.

The introduction of Owen Bowles turned the tide, as he had Anthony Hennis caught by Dan Corsini for 37. James Ettridge went on to make a well earned fifty but wickets started to tumble at the other end. He departed to Edward Clarke – and Bowles & Clarke reduced Falkland from 141 for 2 to 168 for 9, with Bowles taking 5 for 13 and Clarke 2 for 44.

However, Falkland’s last wicket pair put on 33 to get them 201 all out.

Ascot had an early set back when Bains was given out lbw off the bowling of Matthew Bond. A 50 partnership by the Clarke brothers got Ascot back on course until Ollie Clarke was given out lbw off the bowling of Will Herrington for 15.

Ed Clarke was next out for a well earned 51 and the match swayed back and forward between the two teams to reach a nail biting conclusion. Nick Wiggett helped Ascot back on track but when Myles Trainor was run out for 2, the score was 194 for 9 with all three results in the balance.

The scores were equal with two balls left but Zach Pool held his nerve and bowled two dot balls to make the match a tie.

Both sides will reflect on the opportunities to win the match.

Sonning 2 v 2s

The 2s were on the road at Sonning but the only thing they won was the toss as they put Sonning in to bat. Saad Raqeeb got them off to a great start with 65 off 45 balls and then Will Hibberdine kept the momentum going just falling short of a century with 92 off 76 deliveries as Sonning finished on an imposing 296 for 5 off 45 overs.

In response apart from 40 from Ben Churchyard and 23 from Deep Mohain, Ascot were bowled out for 153 all out in a heavy defeat with Dan Anderson doing the damage with 6 for 39.

Aldershot 3 v 3s

The one bright light in our weekend as the 3s crossed the border into Aldershot. Aldershot won the toss and elected to bat first. The 3s bowled and fielded well and despite 43 from Dominic Gaskill and 34 for Paul Bright, Aldershot were restricted to 175 for 7 off 40 overs.

Manvir Dhaliwal was the pick of a good Ascot attack with 3 for 21.

Murray Barter (40) and Manvir Dhaliwal (26) got the 3s off to a good start and despite the loss of a couple of wickets with 10 needed, were brought home by a Waqas Ashraf’s 56 not out to record the first win of the season.

4s v Sulhamstead & Ufton 3

The 4s won the toss and elected to bat at Locks Ride. Amyon Chaffey top scored with 28 but the 4s were unable to get out of second gear and finished on 113 all out in 26.3 overs. Marthish Shivaramalah was the pick of the Sulhamstead attack with 5 for 23.

Sulhamstead knocked off the runs with 7 wickets and nearly 22 overs in hand with Michael Abbott scoring 68. Vishal Vijay gave a little respectability by taking 2 for 10.

Another difficult week but hopefully a new month and with the weather getting better and warmer we will also see better returns for Ascot.
