A massive congratulations to our Under 11s who completed the West Surrey League and Cup double on Sunday.
The West Surrey League playoffs were played at Cranleigh Cricket Club
The semi-final was against East Molesey (looking for revenge after we beat them in the Cup Final last week).
We bowled first and despite them getting off to a good start, we managed to restrict them to 99 thanks to four wickets in the final over bowled by Charlie Dunnett.
There were also fantastic bowling spells from Oli Lancaster and Ben Trunck to put the brakes on their innings. We got off to a confident start, with openers Sam Negus and Samm Daniel both hitting 21 before both were caught at fine leg hooking.
Charlie Dunnett hit a rapid 30 before having to retire, meaning we only needed 18 from the last 6 overs. We then suffered a major wobble losing wickets regularly, before the calm heads of Oli Lancaster and Tom Bailey saw us home with four balls to spare. Never in doubt!
The final was against Guildford and after the good batting from the top of the order in the semi, we had a disastrous start to the final and were 18-5 after only four overs.
Enter Sam Brewster for what proved to be a match winning innings of 30 (retired) with excellent back up down the order from Sam Evans (15) and Oli Lancaster (11 not out) enabling us to post a score of 80, which whilst well below par at least gave us something to bowl at.
Captain Charlie Dunnett took three early wickets to put Guildford on the back foot in their run chase, and then our bowler of the season Oscar Pincus took over to take a further 3 cheap wickets with his left arm spin ably supported by Leo Beardmore Gray’s leg breaks and hugely committed fielding from all of the boys.
However as they were only chasing a small total, we knew we needed to keep the pressure on and bowl them out, and so Alex Goderski was brought on the bowl at the death with Guildford needing just 12 runs from the last two overs but with only two wickets remaining.
Two fast straight yorkers later and it was game over and a fantastic win to complete the double for Ascot’s Under 11s.
