Week 17 – Strictly Come Bowling

The 1s were at home to the leaders Slough 2s – with safety in their sights. Ascot won the toss and elected to bat first. Runs were hard to come by as Nadeem Syed 2 for 15 and Sajid Hussain 4 for 23 as none of the top 5 could get above 13. In the end Ascot reached a respectatble score of 163 for 8 off 50 overs thanks to 75 not out from Andy Murray and 22 not out from Mike Brown.

However, the league leaders found batting difficult against tight bowling and fielding. Ollie Dunnett 4 for 16 and Kevin May 4 for 21 were instrumental in a great win against Slough as they were bowled out for 121 in 38.3 overs.

The win sees them stay in a comfortable 5th place and on Saturday they finish the season at 6th placed Aldershot 1s.

The 2s had an important match at Burnham 3 as four teams go down from this division. Burnham won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite 48 from Hamza Sayed, Burnham could only reach 104 all out in 29.2 overs as Mike Wyatt took 4 for 36. Ascot won in just 20 overs for the loss of 4 wickets despite 4 for 16 from Mohammed Shazez Gulfraz.

The win means that they are 45 points above 7th place and safe with their final match at home to High Wycombe 3.

The 3s were at home to Cove 3 with their fate already sealed – relegation to Level 7. Ascot won the toss and elected to bowl. On a difficult wicket, Cove struggled and were bowled out for 88 as Tim “Strictly” Howson bowled a great spell to finish on 6 for 29.

If Cove found it difficult, then Ascot found it impossible. Kips Finney had the top order in trouble with 5 for 14 and despite Strictly top scoring with 14, Ascot crumbled to 65 all out. A disappointing end to the last home match of the season.

The 3s visit fellow relegated team, Aldershot 3s on Saturday.

The 4s were on the road to Sonning 3s – already safe for the season. Sonning needed the win to keep 6th position and won the toss and elected to field.

Again the wicket was not easy to bat on and with Chris Harding top scoring with 24, the 4s finished on 112 all out in 41 overs. Waqas Tahir took 5 for 21.

Sonning reached the total for the loss of 5 wickets in 36.4 overs with Jacob Parry taking 3 for 16.

The 4s finish the season at home to champions Theale & Tilehurst 3s, with all four teams just playing for pride in the final week.
