Week 8 – Murray 8 for in vain

In Division 2b, the 1s were away to Slough 2s. Ascot won the toss and elected to field. No Slough batsman ever got going but contributions from Ali Ahmed 39, Yaqoot Rafiq 36, Raheel Zaman 22, Naveed Akhtar 27 and 32 from No.10 by Nadeem Syed helped Slough reach 184 all out in 49.1 overs.

This was due to an impressive bowling stint by Andy Murray who bowled 22 overs, 3 maidens,  8 wickets for 63 runs.

By comparison the Ascot innings never got going as only Andy English with 34 made a significant contribution as they subsided to 93 all out in 36.3 overs. Slough only needed two bowlers as Naveed Akhtar has figures of 18.3-3-37-5 and Syed Waqar Ali-Shah 18-2-50-5.

The 1s are now in 7th and this week are at home to 3rd place Aldershot 1s.

In Division 4a, the 2s played their home fixture at Locks Rides due to Royal Ascot and the visitors were Burnham 3s. The 2s won the toss and elected to field.

On a fast outfield, Burnham amassed an impressive 267 for 9 off 51.4 overs declared. Shuaib Baig 74 and Shaz Baig 73 were the top scorers for Burnham while Jason Carr returned figures of 5 for 57 for Ascot.

Unfortunately despite a fighting 61 from Dan Corsini, Ascot were never in the chase and ended up 135 all out off 39.3 overs. D Baig taking 4 for 59.

This week the 5th placed 2s travel to 2nd placed High Wycombe 3s.

In Division 6b, the 3s were the visitors to Cove 3s at the Aldershot Garrison ground. Cove won the toss and elected to field.

Ascot’s innings was built around 74 by Naeem Mohammad and 36 from Gary Clarke as they finished on 170 for 9 off their 52 overs. Kips Finney took 3 for 47 and Tom Woodhouse 3 for 35.

Rain then fell during the tea break and delayed the start of the Cove innings.

At 76 for 2, Cove looked in control with 47 from George Roylance and 23 from Josh Ryland. But a cluster of wickets had the game in the balance at 135 for 6. A dropped catch eased the pressure and despite the fall of 2 more wickets, Cove won by 2 wickets with 5 overs to spare.

This week, the bottom placed 3s are at home to 5th placed Aldershot 3s.

The 4s played their home match against Sonning 3s at the WIndlesham ground. Sonning won the toss and elected to field.

At 24 for 3, Ascot were in trouble but then Joshua Jayasingh 42, Mark Wiggett 47, Nino Trapani 53 not out and Richard Wyatt 31 saw Ascot reach a respectable 235 for 7 off 47 overs.

Sonning started well with an opening partnership of 90 by Wazir Khan 51 and Paul Shumake 46. But Ascot pulled it back with Nigel Greenall taking 4 for 37. But with Sonning on 137 for 6 off 31 overs the rain came and the game was abandoned as a draw.

This week, 3rd placed 4s visit 2nd placed Theale & Tilehurst 3s.

The last couple of weeks have seen Ascot stutter, and with the halfway point of the season being approached – a shake up by the players and teams is required to get the season going again.
